The tvtv initiative
It is difficult to get reliable, detailed program information for the WebShifter guide, especially
if you want to have it for a period longer than a few days.
Several people have asked me to support the services from tvtv in WebShifter.
tvtv is a commercial provider of program information which is available in the following countries:
They provide 2 weeks of high quality detailed program information.
The tvtv websites are online TV guides, similar to the guide in WebShifter.
They allow you to freely browse through the program information.
If you get a subscription (which costs EUR 19,80 for one year) and you have a tvtv compatible
recording program at home, you can mark programs for recording on the tvtv site and the software
will periodically connect to the tvtv site and download the list of program you want recorded.
If the software also has an EPG, it can even download the program information allowing you
to schedule programs directly from the EPG instead of the tvtv website.
Wouldn't it be great if WebShifter could be used with the tvtv service ?
- You'd always have 2 weeks of high quality and detailed program information in the WebShifter guide
- You could remotely schedule recordings using the tvtv site, without opening up your firewall
It would be a real bargain as well in my opinion, for only EUR 19,80 a year.
So, why don't I get started ?
Well, there is a small matter of buying a developer license from tvtv, which is about EUR 1500,00
The idea behind this rather large amount is that you will (hopefully) earn some of it back by receiving
a small commission from tvtv for each subscription that is used in combination with WebShifter.
WebShifter has a steadily growing number of users and I'm sure a lot of them would also
be interested in a tvtv subscription if WebShifter supported it, but it would still be a huge
investment for a small software author like me and not to mention a big financial risk.
So in short, I am all for implementing support for tvtv in WebShifter, but I can only do this if you
will financially support this by buying a WebShifter license.
I estimate it will take about 75 licenses (a Gold license counts for 2) to cover most of the costs.
The earnings from the commissions should cover the rest.
Of course you may also send a donation via PayPal to paypal@iwg.nl to speed up the process.
If you would like to have support for tvtv in WebShifter and you haven't registered WebShifter yet,
don't think twice and purchase a license. Buy now!
Starting today (August 3rd, 2005), I will reserve the earnings of the next 75 WebShifter licenses that
are sold, for purchasing a tvtv developer license.
If it's possible to provide free trial subscriptions for the tvtv services, I will make sure every registered
WebShifter user will get one once I have implemented the support for tvtv.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Regards and thank you for your support,
Rik
